Bromsgrove Dental Crowns
A Dental Crown is a "cap" that looks like a tooth which is then placed over your damaged tooth. This will cover your tooth to restore its strength as well as its shape, size, and appearance.
Dental crowns can be used to protect a weak tooth from breaking.
It can even be used to hold two parts of a broken tooth together.
It can also cover up a tooth when there is more filling than tooth.
They can cover misshapen or severely discolour teeth or even be used to make a cosmetic modification.
Crowns can be porcelain or ceramic as they can be easily matched to the natural colour of your teeth. Porcelain is also very strong and hard wearing.
An impression will be taken of your tooth and a new tooth created from a mould in the lab.
Stage 1 - During your first visit me may take X-rays to check your oral health.
The root and bone around the tooth that will be crowned will also be checked that it is suitable for a Crown.
The dentist will then numb the gum and tooth and file down the tooth to make room for the crown (unless the tooth already has significant wear).
The dentist will then take an impression of the tooth to be crowned and surrounding teeth to ensure your bite will not be affected.
The impressions are sent off to be made into a crown and we will provide you with a temporary crown.
Stage 2 – At your second visit we will check you are happy with the shape and colour of the crown. The dentist will then cement the new crown in place.
They are designed to last 5 to 10 years, but they can sometimes come loose or fall out during trauma or even from chewing something hard.
If this does happen then contact your dentist as soon as possible so the crown can be refitted.
Even though the dental crown isn’t a real tooth, it still needs to be looked after to ensure the tooth underneath is protected from tooth decay.
Ensure you brush and floss on a daily basis and your crown will look after you!
