What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are a type of hyaluronic acid (a substance naturally found in the body) which can be injected into the skin to improve the appearance of wrinkles, folds, scarring and other depressions in the skin. They are generally made from several types of synthetic, man-made and natural collagens.

How do dermal fillers work?

Dermal fillers can plump up your skin, smooth wrinkles and fill out deep lines by replacing the collagen lost due to natural ageing or skin damage. Fillers are injected in small doses under the skin in the area requiring treatment and this fills out the lines and sunken areas, giving the appearance of fuller, smoother and firmer skin.

What does treatment involve?

Getting dermal fillers is a quick procedure with little to no recovery time. The treatment area will firstly be numbed using a numbing cream to ensure minimum discomfort and then the filler is injected under the skin in small and controlled doses. This will usually take no longer than 30 minutes and you can leave the surgery and return to normal activity as soon as the treatment is finished. After treatment there may be a slight amount of bruising or swelling but this will subside quickly, typically lasting no longer than 48 hours. Dermal fillers can last on average between 6-12 months.
